I am seeking advice on how to use the search function on this forum. Specifically, I am trying to narrow the search without doing multiple searches.

As an example, I am looking for a post that I know exists on the riving knife.

When I search for riving, I get 9 responses. The one I am looking for happens to show. It is "Riving Knife setup?"

However, why is Campaign Chest included in the responses? Because way down inb the body of the post is the single work "riving".

My real question - How could I search to eliminate those other eight posts?

Is there a way to do an "exact search" or a "compound search" like for riving knife?

With only nine responses the problem seems small but go looking for "Main Table Ribbing" and see what you get.

Dusty,
Have you tried the 'advanced search' page? If not, there are more options there, like searching titles only, etc. Check it out.

Yes, I am aware of the advanced search function.

As an example, tell me how you would search for all posts regarding "Main table ribbing". There is one thread that contains this subject. The search function returns 11 pages.

If you limit the search to "Titles Only" you get 47 possibles.

If you search for "table" you're back to 11 pages.

If you search for "ribbing" you are getting close. Only nine possibles - one of which is the one wanted.

Is this the way it needs to be done or this there a more direct method. How do you chose the words to search for - especially if you do not already know what is there.

Sorry! I've been happy with the search function. It's a lot better than manual searches.:)

charlese, I didn't say I was unhappy with the search function.

I was trying to learn how to use it "efficiently". If you know how, please help.

Lead me through a search to find a post about bandsaw noise caused by guide bearings.

Hi Dusty,

If you have dial-up like me, each search seems very slow, but those that have hi-speed services can do each search practically instantaneously. Even eleven pages comes fast.

ROFLMAO, I have 12 megabits per second download and don't even think about web-page download times. I barely pause at Windows updates which can be 100's of megabytes.

Sorry again! I use it a lot like you described earlier, and I'm still happy with it. Guess this old curmudgeon will settle for less.
